Hi, I’m Nicki Nørmark

I write stories.

I spent about fourteen years in the Danish film and television industry, and somewhere in the middle of all that, I went to Vancouver Film School to study writing. In the last years of my time in the industry, I worked primarily as a video editor.

I left the creative industry around 2021, not because I stopped seeing myself as a creative person, but because I realised I wasn’t doing my best creative work when it was done on someone else’s behalf. So when people ask why I left, I usually explain it like this: imagine a radio DJ who only wants to play Radiohead. It might come from a place of personal passion, even well intentioned, but it does not work when your job is to reach a broad, mainstream audience. At some point, I understood that my creativity needed to exist on my own terms, and that my job could be something else entirely. The two had always felt connected to me, like a train and its carriage. Only later did I realize that the carriage was, in essence, empty. It was a lie I had told myself, that I needed to hold on to the creative industry in order to be… creative.

My stories draw inspiration from Scandinavian and Japanese folklore, as well as Greek mythology. I try to write stories that feel both timeless and new.

I’ve always been drawn to the slightly darker corners of stories, the parts that stay with you long after the story ends. But I try to make it so that even the saddest stories have room for kindness, hope, and wonder.

I’m currently at work on my first novel, All Falls Are Sudden, a story that steps away from fairytales and into a world where reality bends ever so slightly for the protagonist, who feels out of place as he encounters impossible things. It still aims to do what my previous stories have done. The goal is to ruffle a few feathers inside the reader, and in doing so, I hope to leave behind a story that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading.
